Korean Martial Arts - Tang Soo Do
Tang Soo Do is the traditional form of Korean Karate. It embodies the traditions of Korea with the martial arts way of life. It is not considered a sport, but rather a method of conducting one's self. In recent times, folks have been interested in the sport form of karate, and Tae Kwon Do was born. With an emphasis on sparring, Tae Kwon Do practioners concentrate on competition-readiness. In contrast, Tang Soo Do practioners focus on forms, which is a fight against an invisible opponent. Both forms and sparring, as well as weapons and breaking techniques are taught by Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do, but it depends on the style for where the emphasis is placed. Having come from the same roots, the forms and weapons are very similar, and sometimes it is difficult for the uninitiated to tell the difference. Tang Soo Do literally means "the way of the Empty Hand". Although many people had a hand in creating the style, Hwang Kee is generally considered its "founder". He combined Chinese martial arts, Japanese Karate, and several Korean martial art styles. Practioners learn 7 tenants (Integrity, Concentration, Perseverance, Respect, Self-Control, Humility, and Indominable Spirit), and 5 codes (Loyalty to One's Country, Obey Parents, Honor Friendships, No Retreat in Battle, Wisdom in Battle) which are to guide them in their daily life. The "Do" part of Tang Soo Do means "way of life". Practioners attempt to live Tang So Do on a daily basis, and understand the "art" part of martial arts. The respect that children learn when they first begin studying Tang Soo Do for their instructors and higher ranking students quickly translates into respect for their parents and teachers. With a bit of time, these beginning students advance, and suddenly find themselves the target of respect of newer students. This respect can do wonders for a child's self esteem, as well as foster a life-long understanding of respect, as well as humility. Children, as well as adults, reap the benefits of the physical training, and all benefit from the reminders of a simple way to live.
