Summer fun for Kids - EASY computer programming!
It's June, and that means the kids will be out of school. What will they do all summer? How about a little fun with computer programming? Scratch is a new programming language, from the folks at MIT. The software is free, and they have a website with an entire community of children from all over the world, along with interested adults and educators. The website is http://scratch.mit.edu, where you can download the software, see projects other people have created, and get assistance with your projects. The software can be used to make games as well as animations. The programming language is based on bricks, Lego-style. Children can select bricks that contain a command, and attach it to other bricks. Commands that don't work together are handled simply- the bricks can't be connected. The software includes a bunch of graphics for sprites and backgrounds, as well as sound effects and music loops. It's simple to import graphics and sound files you may already have, or download from the net. There are a number of Scratch users that make their artwork and sound files freely available for other users. My son, 11 years old, made several simple animations to get used to the user interface - it took one afternoon before he was creating animations and simple programs without asking questions about how to do something. On a rainy Saturday, he created a game, and over a two-week period of after-school time and a bit of weekend time, he created a multi-level RPG with some quite complicated programming - remember, he's 11! He's not a super-computer whiz, either! He has since created educational games for his friends to practice their math skills, as well as a number of other games. Projects are "shared", or uploaded, to the Scratch website, and from there, you can link to them on your own webpage or blog. The only additional thing required is Flash. |
